Mana

I really enjoyed the conversation and discussion around Mana today. Essentially mana means “power, prestige, authority” and after introducing the concept to the group I got the group to think about who they know has mana and how we give mana to people.

One of the points of discussion was about how we empower our students to be leaders within the visually impaired community – effectively giving them opportunities to develop their mana and then show their mana.

I gave the example of a former colleague who I always felt inspired by in the way that they worked with families.

Mana can be inherited but it can also be developed. When we invite people to the centre we acknowledge their mana by making them feel welcome etc. Mana seems to fit so perfectly with the other values so it was great for everyone to grasp this concept so quickly and start making connections to our work and our values.
